History & Significance

The Second Civil War Kent rising had sympathisers in Surrey who attempted small risings in the county. Godstone and Bletchingley on the road between London and the coast were points where Royalist groups attempted to intercept parliamentary communications and raise the county. The Surrey parliamentary committee mobilised quickly and suppressed these outbreaks before they could link with the Kentish rising. Surrey's proximity to London made its political control essential for Parliament.
