History & Significance

Spalding in the Lincolnshire Fenland was secured as a Parliamentary post in 1643 controlling the drainage channels and routes through the southern fens. Parliamentary forces based at Spalding conducted patrols that prevented Royalist incursion from Newark into the fenland and secured the supply route between Peterborough and Boston.
