The Battle

History & Significance

Henry I besieged Arundel Castle in 1102 as part of his campaign against the powerful Norman magnate Robert de Belleme, Earl of Shrewsbury. Arundel was one of de Belleme's key English strongholds. The swift fall of the castle and de Belleme's subsequent exile demonstrated Henry's determination to break the over-mighty barons he had inherited from his brother's reign. Arundel Castle then became a royal fortress and was subsequently granted to the d'Aubigny family.
