The Battle

History & Significance

As the Civil War entered its final phase in 1645, parliamentary forces mopped up Royalist resistance in south Hampshire between Portsmouth, Fareham and Titchfield. With Winchester and Basing House still holding, the southern Hampshire operations aimed to prevent any Royalist relief force using the coast road from the west. The final parliamentary operations in Hampshire in 1645-46 cleared the county completely before the surrender of the last major strongholds.
