Stockbridge on the Test in central Hampshire was the site of a cavalry skirmish in 1645 between Parliamentary horse and Royalist foragers from the Winchester garrison. The Test crossing at Stockbridge was important for Parliamentary forces seeking to isolate Winchester from the west, and its control was contested between the two garrisons.
