History & Significance

Yorkshire gentry assembled at York in 1640 and petitioned Charles I for redress of grievances including the burden of quartering the royal army raised for the Bishops Wars. The Yorkshire petition, signed by dozens of prominent gentry, was one of several county petitions that demonstrated how the Bishops Wars crisis had radicalised even previously loyal gentry. It contributed to the pressure that forced Charles to summon the Long Parliament.
