The town of Brechin in Angus was in contested territory during the 1689 rising — neither firmly Jacobite nor government controlled. Minor skirmishing occurred as both sides attempted to levy men, horses and supplies from the Angus lowlands. The town sits on the edge of the Highland hills, making it strategically significant as a transition point between Highland and coastal routes. Several prominent Angus families held conflicted loyalties.
