The Battle

History & Significance

While Bishop Odo's rebellion of 1088 centred on the castles of Kent, Sussex and the south-east, William Rufus based himself on London and used the city as his primary source of military support and finance. London's loyalty to Rufus was crucial to his success -- the city's resources allowed him to pay and supply the forces that reduced Tonbridge, Pevensey and Rochester in succession. William Rufus explicitly thanked London for its loyalty after the rebellion was crushed.
