The Battle

History & Significance

The young Edward III led his first campaign into the north against Scottish raiders under Moray and Douglas. The English army marched through Weardale but the Scots, though located, refused pitched battle and withdrew. The English suffered severe supply problems in the fells. On one occasion Scottish cavalry rode through the English camp at night causing confusion. The campaign was a humiliation that led to the Treaty of Northampton 1328.
