History & Significance

The Argyll Rising of 1685 collapsed rapidly when his small force was hemmed in between government armies. Argyll's followers deserted and he attempted to escape disguised as a peasant, crossing the River Clyde, but was recognised and captured near Inchinnan in Renfrewshire. He was taken to Edinburgh, his previous sentence of death reinstated without trial, and executed. The Argyll Rising ended as a total failure.
