History & Significance

After marching from Galloway through Ayrshire and Lanarkshire, the Pentland Rising rebels reached the Pentland Hills south of Edinburgh only to be caught by General Tam Dalziel's professional force. The Covenanters fought well at first but were outnumbered and outfought. Around fifty were killed on the field; many prisoners were subsequently executed or transported to Barbados. The rising lasted barely ten days from its start in Galloway to its end at Rullion Green. It became a martyrology that inspired the next generation of Covenanters.
