The Battle

History & Significance

As part of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd's great campaign of 1257 through south Wales, he inflicted a major defeat on an English force at Bryn yr Eryr in the Tywi valley, killing the English commander Stephen Bauzan. The 1257 campaign was Llywelyn's most ambitious military achievement before 1264, bringing all the southern Welsh princes under his overlordship through a combination of military pressure and diplomatic skill. By the end of 1257 he controlled virtually all of Wales.
