History & Significance

Durham's capture gave the Scots a major supply base and denied the Royalists one of their most defensible positions. The cathedral and castle had served as Royalist headquarters for the northeast. After its fall, the city briefly housed thousands of Scottish prisoners following the Battle of Dunbar in 1650
