History & Significance

After the defeat at Fornham St Genevieve, Earl Robert of Leicester and his countess were captured by Ranulf de Glanvill, the royal justiciar. Glanvill had organized the loyalist forces in Suffolk and directed the interception. This capture effectively ended the military threat in East Anglia and earned Glanvill enormous royal favour and his subsequent rise to chief justiciar.
