The Battle

History & Significance

Great Yarmouth was the most important port in East Anglia and a key supply base for the Eastern Association. Royalist ships from the King's fleet made periodic attempts to harass the port and disrupt coastal trade. The Parliamentary navy and local militia successfully defended the port throughout the Civil War. Yarmouth's trade — particularly the herring fishery — provided revenue vital to the Eastern Association.
