The Battle

History & Significance

While Hamilton's Engager army marched south in 1648, anti-Engager Covenanting forces associated with the Kirk party attempted to block Engager military activity in Perthshire and create a rear-area problem for Hamilton. Perth was a flashpoint for this intra-Scottish conflict. The anti-Engager faction was supported by the western Covenanting radicals who saw the Engagement with Charles I as a betrayal of the Covenant.
