The Battle

History & Significance

After Dal Righ in 1306, Bruce dispersed his companions and sought refuge in the western islands, wintering partly in Kintyre and the Hebrides under the protection of sympathetic Gaelic lords. The months in hiding allowed Bruce to regroup, recruit from the Gaelic West, and plan his return to mainland Scotland. The spider and web story, associated with this period though legendary, symbolises the historical reality of Bruce's determination after repeated setbacks to renew the struggle in 1307.
