William Douglas, Knight of Liddesdale, conducted sustained operations against English-held positions in southern Scotland from 1341 onward. He captured Edinburgh Castle for the Scots in 1341 through a ruse, recovered Roxburgh for a period, and fought extensive guerrilla and siege operations across Lothian, Teviotdale and the Borders. Douglas was later captured by the English and his eventual murder by his own kinsman in 1353 illustrated the internecine violence that complicated Scottish resistance in this period.
