The Battle

History & Significance

Pevensey Castle was one of the key fortresses held by rebels supporting Robert Curthose against William Rufus in 1088. Odo of Bayeux held it with a small garrison. William Rufus besieged it and cut off all supplies. After six weeks the garrison was starving and surrendered. Odo was arrested and exiled. The siege of Pevensey was the decisive moment of the 1088 rebellion — with Pevensey and Rochester fallen, the revolt collapsed.
