The Battle

History & Significance

Fourteen years before the Boudiccan revolt, the Iceni — then a client kingdom under Prasutagus — rose against Ostorius Scapula\'s disarmament edict. Tacitus records that the Iceni chose a defensible position ringed by an earthwork barrier and resisted in force. Scapula dismounted his cavalry and attacked on foot, breaking through the rampart. This early rebellion foreshadowed the catastrophic revolt of 60-61 AD, and the harsh Roman response stored up resentment.

Forces Involved

Roman: Legio IX Hispana and auxiliary units. Iceni: client kingdom tribal levies entrenched in a hillfort or enclosure
