History & Significance

Richard de Clare, son of the conqueror of Ceredigion, was ambushed and killed by Welsh forces in Ceredigion in April 1136, the opening blow of the great Welsh recovery under Stephen. He was caught in woodland while travelling without sufficient escort. His death triggered the Welsh uprising that culminated in Crug Mawr and the expulsion of Normans from most of Ceredigion. His son, the future Strongbow, was a minor at his death.
