History & Significance

Horsham served as a parliamentary garrison town in central Sussex during the Civil War, guarding against Royalist incursions from Surrey and from the Hampshire Royalists. The Wealden ironworks in the area around Horsham — one of the main centres of English iron production — were of military significance. Parliamentary control of the Weald iron industry gave them a decisive advantage in artillery supply throughout the war.
