The Battle

History & Significance

Thomas of Lancaster, the most powerful English magnate and Edward II's cousin, was captured at Boroughbridge while fleeing north to join the Scots. Andrew Harclay held the bridge and ford with his northern levies against Lancaster's cavalry charge. Lancaster was tried and beheaded at Pontefract Castle. The battle temporarily ended baronial opposition to Edward II but could not prevent his eventual deposition.
