After landing in Kintyre, Argyll attempted to recruit his Campbell clansmen for the rising against James VII. Though some joined, the response was disappointing. Argyll moved through Kintyre encountering government patrols and local opposition. His small force grew slowly but never approached the numbers needed to challenge the government. The Kintyre phase of the rising revealed that Campbell clan loyalty to the exiled Earl was less absolute than hoped.
