History & Significance

Southsea Castle, guarding the approaches to Portsmouth Harbour from the south, was held by Royalists as part of Goring defence of the Portsmouth perimeter in 1642. Parliamentary naval forces bombarded the castle from seaward while land forces pressed it from Portsea Island.
