Before the registered Battle of Nantwich itself Fairfax cavalry swept aside Royalist screening forces as they approached from the east through ice and snow; the advance guard action on 25 January 1644 set up the victory over Byron that followed; it showed the winter capability of the Parliamentary Northern Horse.
