History & Significance

Bolton Castle in Wensleydale, former prison of Mary Queen of Scots, held a Royalist garrison into late 1645. Its remote location in the Dales made resupply difficult for both sides. The garrison surrendered on terms when all hope of relief had passed following Naseby.
