History & Significance

Grafton Regis was garrisoned by Royalists as an outpost between Oxford and Northampton. Parliamentary forces besieged and took it in December 1643. The house belonged to the family with historic royal associations — Anne Boleyn\'s mother was a Stafford of Grafton. Its capture was part of the systematic elimination of Royalist outposts in Northamptonshire that preceded Parliament\'s more secure control of the county. Northamptonshire was a contested county throughout 1643, with garrisons of both sides spread across it.

Forces Involved

Parliamentary: Northamptonshire forces. Royalist: garrison of a few companies
