History & Significance

Mancetter (Manduessedum) in Warwickshire sits at the junction of Watling Street and the River Anker — a militarily vital position. A Roman fort was established here, and the site is the most credible location for the final battle against Boudicca in AD 60/61. The narrow wooded defile described by Tacitus matches the Anker valley terrain. The fort controlled movement between the south and the Midlands interior.
