History & Significance

The debate and passage of the Grand Remonstrance in Parliament on 22 November 1641 was accompanied by such passion that members drew swords in the House of Commons. The remonstrance listing 204 grievances against the crown passed by only eleven votes. The near physical confrontation in Parliament that night and the polarisation it revealed made military conflict increasingly plausible.
