History & Significance

The Action at Clifton was the last significant engagement of the 1745 Jacobite Rising and demonstrated the Highlanders' continued tactical superiority in close combat against British cavalry. Though militarily minor, it boosted Highland morale during their retreat northward and showed that even in England, the government forces could not decisively crush the rebellion through conventional cavalry tactics.
