History & Significance

The Jacobites captured Fort Augustus (the main government fort in the Great Glen) in early 1746 during the period between Falkirk Muir and Culloden. The garrison of government-supporting Highlanders surrendered. The capture gave the Jacobites control of the central Highlands briefly, though they lacked the resources to fully exploit it.
