The Battle

History & Significance

Before the Battle of Lewes — where Henry III was himself captured — Prince Edward (the future Edward I) captured Northampton from de Montfort's supporters. Edward found an unblocked section of wall and sent Marcher troops through. The town's fall damaged the baronial cause and showed Edward's military initiative, though he squandered the advantage by leaving for the north while Lewes was lost in his absence.
