The Battle

History & Significance

Aberdeen and its university remained centres of royalist and episcopalian sympathy during the Bishops Wars. The Gordon family and other northeast royalists attempted to organise a counter-muster in Aberdeenshire to resist the Covenanting army. However, Montrose's rapid advance from the west outpaced the royalist organisation and the counter-muster never achieved the critical mass needed to oppose Covenanting forces effectively.
