History & Significance

In the period between Lewes and Evesham, Simon de Montfort governed England with Henry III as a captive king. He summoned the parliament of 1265 including knights and burgesses for the first time. Royal castles were transferred to baronial constables. Royalists who refused submission were besieged. De Montfort used military force to maintain order as the royalist opposition under Prince Edward grew. This unprecedented experiment in parliamentary government was maintained by military power.
