History & Significance

Following the Scottish victory at Newburn Ford on 28 August 1640, the Covenanting army occupied Newcastle and took control of the northern counties of England. The occupation of Newcastle with its coal trade gave the Scots enormous leverage over London, which depended on Newcastle coal. Charles I was forced to pay the Scots army 850 pounds a day to remain while negotiations proceeded, making the Long Parliament financially inescapable.
