History & Significance

Approximately 5,000 Chartist coal miners and ironworkers under John Frost marched on Newport in Monmouthshire in what may have been intended as the start of a national insurrection. Soldiers of the 45th Regiment of Foot hidden inside the Westgate Hotel fired on the crowd, killing at least 22 and wounding many more.
