Crowland Abbey in the Lincolnshire Fens was occupied as a Royalist garrison, exploiting its island position in the fenland. Parliamentary forces besieged and took it in 1643. The Fenland area was strategically important for controlling the flat country between Lincolnshire and East Anglia. The Eastern Association relied on controlling the Fenland water routes, and Royalist garrisons in the Fens posed a persistent threat to Parliamentary communications. Crowland\'s capture was part of the campaign that preceded the Eastern Association\'s eventual control of Lincolnshire.
