The Battle

History & Significance

As the Scottish Covenanter army of the Earl of Leven marched south through Yorkshire in January-April 1644 to join the siege of York, it had to secure numerous river crossings against Royalist interference. The Swale crossing at Thornton Bridge was one such contested point. These small actions along the Scottish line of march are rarely recorded in detail but collectively shaped the strategic situation that led to Marston Moor.
