The Covenanting army conducted major musters at Stirling in 1639 as part of its mobilisation against Charles I during the First Bishops War. Stirling's strategic position controlling the route between the Highlands and Lowlands made it the natural concentration point for a national Scottish army. The muster demonstrated the nationwide nature of Covenanting support and the professional organisation being imposed on the movement by Alexander Leslie.
