History & Significance

Montrose landed in Caithness from Orkney with a small force of Danish and Orcadian soldiers, attempting to raise the Highlands for Charles II. He marched south gathering minimal support — most of the Highland clans who might have helped him in 1644-45 were now cautious or committed to the Covenanters. His small force was destroyed at Carbisdale before his campaign could develop.
