History & Significance

The storming of Northampton in April 1264 was the opening military move of the Second Barons War campaign that culminated in the Battle of Lewes. Prince Edward led the royalist assault, capturing Simon de Montfort\'s son and a large baronial garrison. The town\'s walls had been breached by a priory building adjacent to them. Despite this royalist success, Simon de Montfort senior won decisively at Lewes just weeks later, capturing both Henry III and Edward himself.
