The Battle

History & Significance

After Glenfinnan, Prince Charles marched his growing army eastward through the Great Glen toward the Highland heartland. Government garrisons at Fort Augustus and Fort William were bypassed — the Jacobites lacked the artillery to take them and could not afford the time. As the army marched, more clans joined. Camerons, MacDonnells of Glengarry and others swelled the force. The march through the Great Glen demonstrated the Jacobite army's ability to move rapidly through Highland terrain and reach the Lowlands before the government could concentrate against them.
