The Battle

History & Significance

With French assistance (as part of the Franco-Scottish alliance) the Scots temporarily recaptured Berwick. The town was burned but the castle held. Edward III rushed north and retook the town. The event provoked Edward III into the brutal Burnt Candlemas — his devastating retaliatory raid into Scotland that burned everything as far as Edinburgh, conducted during the candlemas season.
