History & Significance

Faversham was one of several Kent towns seized during the Second Civil War rising of 1648. Its harbour and position on the road between Canterbury and London made it a useful rebel strongpoint. Parliamentary forces subsequently had to reduce these outlying garrisons after Maidstone.
