History & Significance

General Monck's storming and sacking of Dundee was one of the most violent episodes of the Cromwellian conquest of Scotland. The town was taken by assault and comprehensively plundered. A large part of the Scottish government's movable wealth had been stored there — including state papers and much of Scotland's treasury — all of which fell to the Parliamentary army.
