History & Significance

The Second Civil War in Essex began with a rising of disaffected Royalists and Presbyterians who marched from Chelmsford to join the force that would seize Colchester. The Chelmsford rendezvous point was the starting assembly point for the Essex Royalists who, with the Kent men under Lucas and Lisle, created the force that occupied Colchester and precipitated the great siege.
