History & Significance

Worcester was occupied by Royalist forces in September 1642 under Prince Rupert following the first cavalry engagement of the Civil War at Powick Bridge outside the city. The city declared for the king and became a Royalist base in the west Midlands. Parliamentary forces briefly held elements of the suburbs before the main Royalist occupation.
