History & Significance

The Pentland Rising of 1666 began when a small group of Galloway Covenanters rescued an elderly man from soldiers and the incident escalated into an armed uprising. The rebels gathered at Lanark and marched east, gathering perhaps 900 men. They issued a declaration restoring the Covenant and marched toward Edinburgh. Their numbers were never large enough to threaten the government seriously but their courage was remarkable.
