History & Significance

Cromwell personally led the storming of Hillesden House in Buckinghamshire — a satellite garrison of Oxford. The house was taken in a swift assault; the garrison of about 260 soldiers surrendered. The Denton family lost their home and their estate was sequestered. The parish church nearby, with its bullet holes still visible, is a tangible reminder of the assault.
